WERIGO SAGA Chapter 9: The Recruits

PART 1 · THE TURNCOAT (cold open).

PANEL 1. Night. The top floor of a glass tower in Jakarta. A foreign EV giant's office: a faceless CEO silhouette in a high-backed chair, red city lights. Yoko sits across, sweating, grinning.

• CEO: You worked inside their guild.
• YOKO: Thirty days. I know every weakness they have.

PANEL 2. A red contract glows on the desk. Yoko signs. Title card: CH.9 · THE RECRUITS

• CEO: Then bring me their people. Every rider they recruit, you buy.
• SYSTEM (red): [CONTRACT SIGNED] [NEW CLASS: TURNCOAT] [QUEST: EMPTY THE GUILD]

PART 2 · RECRUITMENT DAY.

PANEL 3. Morning, the banjar hall. A trestle table with a basket of croissants and sourdough, Komang already eating one.

• KOMANG: If nobody comes, at least we have croissants.

PANEL 4. Nobody comes. One hour. Two. Komang eats his third croissant.

• SYSTEM (blue): [RECRUITMENT QUEST: 0 / 5]

PANEL 5 · SPLASH. Five people walk in at once: Putu with paint on his hands, Ayu in dance costume, Ketut smelling of the sea, Made on a coughing petrol bike, Kadek silent with a toolbox.

• ARYA: ...Five.
• KOMANG: (mouth full) Five!

PANEL 6 · RALLY. Arya activates his new skill. Five blue windows open over the five heads.

• SYSTEM: [PUTU · ARTISAN] [AYU · SPOTLIGHT] [KETUT · TIDECALLER] [MADE · IRONWILL] [KADEK · ??? UNREADABLE]
• ARYA (thought): The System can't read him?

PART 3 · THE TRIALS.

PANEL 7. Arya's rules on a whiteboard, pinned beside the WERIGO poster: battery over 80% at every handover, two clean helmets, phone holder installed, charging briefing, smile.

• ARYA: One day. Real jobs. Real guests.

PANEL 8 · AYU. A villa in Canggu. Ayu gives the charging briefing to a Korean family in fluent Korean, then French to the neighbours.

• SYSTEM: [SPOTLIGHT: GUEST TRUST +40]

PANEL 9 · KETUT. Midday sun. Ketut stops the squad and looks at the sky.

• KETUT: Rain in forty minutes. Take the inland road.
• SYSTEM: [TIDECALLER: STORM PREDICTED · 40 MIN]
• (Forty minutes later the squad is dry under a warung roof as the sky opens.)

PANEL 10. Break under the warung roof. Sekar eats a browkies from a paper bag.

• SEKAR: Don't tell Dewa I'm sharing.

PANEL 11 · PUTU. Putu repaints a scratched helmet into a work of art. The guest wants to buy it.

• SYSTEM: [ARTISAN: ITEM UPGRADED]

PANEL 12 · KADEK. A bike in the line-up. Kadek lays his palm on the battery case, frowns, points at the charging port. Dewa checks: a loose connector nobody else noticed.

• DEWA: ...How did you know?
• KADEK (signs, subtitled): It told me.
• SYSTEM (flickering): [KADEK · ??? ] [SKILL DETECTED: ???]

PANEL 13 · MADE. Made on a borrowed Wedison for the day: ten deliveries, no petrol stop, and he's home in time to pick up his kids.

• MADE: I didn't pay for fuel today. First time in eight years.
• SYSTEM: [IRONWILL: 10 / 10]

PART 4 · THE ENVELOPES.

PANEL 14. That night, five doors. At each one, a man in loafers holding a fat envelope.

• YOKO: Double salary. A foreign company. No more helmets for tourists.

PANEL 15 · MONTAGE. Putu staring at the envelope beside an unfinished ogoh-ogoh. Ayu at the dressing mirror. Ketut on his father's leaking boat. Made at the kitchen table with a pile of bills and two sleeping kids.

• SYSTEM (red, over each): [TEMPTATION]

PANEL 16. Next morning, the banjar. Empty. Five chairs.

• SYSTEM (red): [RECRUITMENT QUEST: 0 / 5]
• KOMANG: He bought them. Yoko bought all of them.

PANEL 17. Arya looks at the empty chairs.

• ARYA: No. We go to them.

PART 5 · FIVE HOUSES.

PANEL 18. Putu's banjar workshop. A half-built ogoh-ogoh demon, three metres tall.

• PUTU: The money would finish my ogoh-ogoh.
• ARYA: Then the whole banjar parades something you sold yourself for. Is that the demon you want to burn?
• (Putu tears the envelope in half.)

PANEL 19. Uluwatu at sunset. Ayu in the kecak circle, the chanting "cak-cak-cak" rising, the fire behind her.

• AYU: In kecak, nobody dances alone. Seventy voices keep one story alive.
• AYU: His money wanted me to dance alone.

PANEL 20. Jimbaran. Ketut and his father patching the boat.

• KETUT'S FATHER: The sea pays late but it pays honest. Go with the one who asked you first.

PANEL 21. Made's kitchen. The envelope is still sealed on the table, next to the bills.

• MADE: I didn't open it. I just... didn't know how to say no to money.
• ARYA: You said it yesterday, ten times. On ten deliveries. No petrol.

PANEL 22. The mechanic's garage. Kadek is fixing a neighbour's bike. The envelope is on the floor, stepped on, unopened. Yoko's pitch was all words.

• KOMANG: ...He never heard a word Yoko said.
• KADEK (signs, subtitled): Who?
• (Komang laughs so hard he cries.)

PANEL 23. Yoko, outside in the rain, envelopes soaked, phone ringing: the CEO.

• SYSTEM (red): [QUEST FAILED: EMPTY THE GUILD] [TURNCOAT · REPUTATION -50]
• YOKO: ...Next time.

PART 6 · THE SQUAD.

PANEL 24. The banjar, morning. Five chairs, five people. Dewa hands out sourdough for breakfast.

• DEWA: Squad Leader. Your squad.

PANEL 25 · SPLASH, VFX. Sunset ride along the coast: Arya in front on the olive Athena, five recruits on five Wedison bikes behind him. Blue light lines connect all six riders into a glowing emblem in the sky.

• SYSTEM (blue, enormous): [RALLY · FULL SQUAD] [RECRUITMENT QUEST: 5 / 5] [SQUAD REGISTERED: ARYA'S SQUAD]

PANEL 26. The windows flicker. A new window, gold and ancient, opens over all of them.

• SYSTEM (old gold): [NOTICE: A HIGHER AUTHORITY HAS OBSERVED THIS SQUAD]

PART 7 · THE FIRST PLAYER (the mind-blowing ending).

PANEL 27. Evening. Arya brings a box of donuts (Jose Bakery logo on the box) to the grandmother from CH.2 to say thank you for the blessing. She is making canang on her porch.

• ARYA: Nenek, your blessing worked. I have a squad now. Five.

PANEL 28.

• GRANDMOTHER: Five is a good number, nak. In my time, we were five too.
• ARYA: ...Your time?

PANEL 29 · FLASHBACK, sepia. 1963. Five young Balinese riders on old bicycles and a motorbike on an empty dirt road, a volcano smoking in the distance. Above each of them, the same blue System windows. In front, a young woman with a frangipani in her hair.

PANEL 30 · REVEAL, full page. The present. The grandmother looks up. Her eyes glow gold. Behind her, a colossal golden window unfolds across the night sky.

• SYSTEM (gold, enormous): [GATEKEEPER · RANK S] [THE FIRST PLAYER OF THE ISLAND] [ACTIVE SINCE 1963]

PANEL 31.

• GRANDMOTHER: The System is not new, nak. Only the bikes are.
• GRANDMOTHER: Your Operator thinks he opens the gates. The island only lends them.

PANEL 32 · CLIFFHANGER. Far away, a private jet lands at night. An old man in a golf polo steps down, followed by Pak Chan carrying his golf bag.

• SYSTEM (unreadable, static): [PLAYER: ???] [RANK: ???]
• PAK CHAN (phone, to ODY): He's early. Three days. Don't be late.
