WERIGO SAGA Chapter 14: Nyepi

PART 1 · THE ISLAND THAT SWITCHES OFF (cold open).

PANEL 1 · SPLASH, VFX. Bali seen from high above at night: thousands of lights. Then, one by one, the lights go out, from the edges to the centre, until the whole island is black under a sky full of stars.

• SYSTEM (grey, glitching): [WORLD EVENT: THE DAY OF SILENCE] [DURATION: 24 HOURS] [SYSTEM STATUS: ...]

PANEL 2. The Werigo base, three days earlier. Putu's half-finished ogoh-ogoh head from CH.13 now sits on a table, bigger, angrier, with bamboo ribs. Title card: CH.14 · NYEPI

• PUTU: Three days. Then the island turns off.
• DENISA: The whole island? Like a phone?
• KOMANG: Like a phone with no charger. For twenty-four hours.

PART 2 · OPERATION SILENCE.

PANEL 3. ODY at the whiteboard, marker in hand. The board reads OPERATION SILENCE with a checklist drawn as icons.

• ODY: Nyepi rules for every renter. One: every bike delivered the day before at one hundred percent. Two: helmets and phone holders checked. Three: anyone whose rental ends on Nyepi gets extended now, on WhatsApp.
• ARYA: Nobody rides on the day.
• ODY: Nobody rides on the day. Not even us.

PANEL 4 · COMEDY. On the laptop, a video call. Pak Chan and Pak Remy in Singapore.

• PAK CHAN: The gates stay open, of course.
• ODY: The gates close, Pak. The roads close. The airport closes.
• PAK REMY: What is the cost of one day of zero revenue?
• ODY: Zero. Nobody on the island is spending either.
• PAK REMY: ...I hate that this makes sense.

PANEL 5 · SYSTEM. A blue window over the base.

• SYSTEM (blue): [QUEST: OPERATION SILENCE] [37 RENTERS · 37 BIKES · 100% BY TOMORROW NIGHT]

PANEL 6 · PRODUCT, COMEDY (Bees Pro beat). Outside the base. Komang loads the crew's Nyepi supplies onto a red Bees Pro: two blue water gallons stand on the flat footboard, rice and snacks in a box on the seat behind him. He tries to balance a THIRD gallon on his knees.

• KOMANG: Two fit on the floor. The third one is... emotional support.
• SYSTEM: [OVERWEIGHT? NO. OVERCONFIDENT.]
• ARYA: Two gallons. Two trips. You have three days.

PANEL 7 · MONTAGE, PRODUCT. The crew delivering across the island: Arya on his olive Athena at a villa gate in Ubud, Sekar on her pink Athena in Seminyak, Dewa on his grey EdPower in Uluwatu. On each bike's display, the battery reads full.

• CAPTION: The day before the silence, every Werigo bike goes home full.

PANEL 8. A tourist family at a villa gate, confused, holding a printed notice.

• TOURIST MUM: So we can't go out at all?
• SEKAR: Not for one day. Stay in, keep the lights low, and look up at night.
• TOURIST DAD: Look up at what?
• SEKAR: You'll see.

PART 3 · MELASTI.

PANEL 9 · SPLASH. A beach at morning. A long procession in white: women carrying offerings on their heads, men carrying temple umbrellas and sacred objects wrapped in cloth, walking into the sea breeze. Gamelan.

• CAPTION: Melasti. Before the new year, the island walks its sacred things to the sea to be cleaned.

PANEL 10. The grandmother, the Gatekeeper, in white, sprinkling holy water on Arya's and Denisa's heads with a frangipani flower.

• GRANDMOTHER: The sea takes the dirt of the year. Then the island can start again.
• DENISA: Does it take bad habits too?
• GRANDMOTHER: Only if you let go of them.

PANEL 11 · VFX. As the water touches Arya, his System window flickers and a thin line of static runs through it.

• SYSTEM (grey): [SIGNAL WEAKENING] [...]
• ARYA (thought): The System... is shaking?

PART 4 · THE LAST FLIGHT.

PANEL 12. The airport, the evening before Nyepi. The arrivals board, most rows already showing CLOSED. Through the doors come CHLOE (messy blonde bun, sunglasses on her head) and JAKE (sandy surfer hair, Hawaiian shirt, surfboard bag).

• CHLOE: We made it! The last flight before the island turns off!
• JAKE: The pilot said "enjoy the silence". I thought it was a joke.

PANEL 13 · PRODUCT. Outside, Arya is waiting beside a YELLOW Wedison Athena, a navy EdPower behind it with a surf rack.

• ARYA: You said save the yellow one.
• CHLOE: You SAVED it?!
• ARYA: It has been waiting since your postcard. Charged to one hundred.

PANEL 14 · VFX. A gold window opens over Chloe, the same one from CH.5, now with a new line.

• SYSTEM (gold): [VISITOR PASS · RENEWED] [RETURNING PLAYER BONUS: +1 FRIEND]
• JAKE: What's the friend bonus?
• ARYA: Komang is cooking tonight.

PART 5 · PENGERUPUKAN (the loud night).

PANEL 15. Dusk at a crossroads. Offerings (tawur) on the ground, a priest sprinkling holy water, men beating kulkul drums, children banging pots.

• CAPTION: The night before the silence is the loudest night of the year.

PANEL 16 · SPLASH, VFX. The ogoh-ogoh parade. Torches, drums, and Putu's giant ogoh-ogoh on a bamboo platform carried by twenty young men. Its face is a scowling demon with fangs and... thick black rectangular glasses.

• PUTU: I call him BHUTA DEADLINE.
• KOMANG: Why does he look like Pak Chan?
• PUTU: I don't know what you mean.

PANEL 17 · VFX, FANTASY. The ogoh-ogoh's eyes glow red. For a second it seems to turn its head toward the crowd. Shadow-spirits swirl around the torches.

• SYSTEM (red, glitching): [BHUTA KALA DETECTED] [LEVEL: ANNUAL]

PANEL 18. The young men spin the ogoh-ogoh three times at the crossroads, shouting, so the demons get confused and lose their way.

• GRANDMOTHER: Make noise, scare them, spin them. Then tomorrow we go quiet, and they think Bali is empty. And they leave.
• JAKE: So the whole island pretends nobody's home?
• GRANDMOTHER: For one day. It works every year.

PANEL 19 · COMEDY, SPLIT. Meanwhile in Hong Kong, the same week: under the Canal Road flyover, an old woman beats a paper figure with a slipper. Pak Liam (the owner, white golf polo) stands beside Pak Chan and Pak Remy, who look very uncomfortable.

• CAPTION: Hong Kong. The same week. Jingzhe, the Awakening of Insects.
• PAK LIAM: Villain hitting. You write the name of your trouble, she beats it away.
• PAK REMY: (writing on the paper) "Late payments."

PANEL 20 · COMEDY. The old woman hits the paper with her slipper, very fast. Pak Chan hands her a second paper.

• PAK LIAM: And you, Chan?
• PAK CHAN: (quietly) ...Stress.
• OLD WOMAN: That one costs extra.

PANEL 21.

• CAPTION: Two islands. The same idea. Chase away what haunts you, then start again.

PART 6 · THE SILENCE.

PANEL 22 · SPLASH. 06:00. The island is empty. A long empty road past a temple gate, a closed warung with its shutters down. No bikes, no cars, only birds on the power lines. Morning mist.

• SYSTEM (grey): [NYEPI · 06:00] [AMATI GENI · AMATI KARYA · AMATI LELUNGAN · AMATI LELANGUAN]
• CAPTION: No fire. No work. No travel. No entertainment.

PANEL 23 · VFX. Arya wakes up at home. His System window tries to open and fails, breaking into static, then vanishes.

• SYSTEM: [SYSTEM OFFLINE]
• ARYA: ...Hello?
• (Nothing answers.)

PANEL 24. Arya sits on the step of his family compound, no phone, no quest. His mother sweeps nothing, quietly, then sits beside him.

• ARYA'S MOTHER: No quests today?
• ARYA: No anything today.
• ARYA'S MOTHER: Good. You were a person before you were a player.

PANEL 25 · COMEDY. Komang tiptoes along the empty lane carrying a bag of snacks, sneaking to Arya's house. A torchlight hits him. PAK GEDE, the pecalang, stands in the middle of the road.

• PAK GEDE: Where are you going?
• KOMANG: ...Nowhere. I'm meditating. While walking.
• PAK GEDE: Meditate at home.

PANEL 26 · SYSTEM, COMEDY. A tiny grey window glitches over Pak Gede.

• SYSTEM (grey, flickering): [PAK GEDE · CLASS: WARDEN · RANK: UNDEFEATED]
• KOMANG: (walking back home) Even the System is scared of him.

PANEL 27. Chloe and Jake at their villa, sitting on the floor playing cards in daylight, whispering.

• JAKE: Why are we whispering? Nobody can hear us.
• CHLOE: The whole island is whispering. It feels rude not to.

PANEL 28. Denisa at her villa writes in a paper notebook with a pencil, her laptop closed beside her. Her neighbour's offering at the gate. The white Victory parked, silent.

• DENISA (thought): Thirty countries. This is the first one that asked me to stop.

PART 7 · ODY WITHOUT A QUEST.

PANEL 29. ODY at his rented house, sitting on the floor with his back against the wall. His phone on the floor beside him shows NO SERVICE.

• SYSTEM (grey, fading): [ODY · ACTIVE QUESTS: 14 → 0]

PANEL 30 · FLASHBACK. Small panels: Singapore, the fast parallel meetings from CH.12, three calls at once, the gold and bronze tier windows, the midnight messages.

• ODY (thought): Since Singapore I've never stopped. Not one day.

PANEL 31. His Balinese neighbour, an old man, leans over the low wall and quietly passes ODY a banana leaf with rice and a little sambal. Not a word.

• ODY: (whispering) Suksma, Pak.
• NEIGHBOUR: (whispering) Eat. Then sit. That's the whole job today.

PANEL 32 · EMOTIONAL. ODY eats slowly on the step. Behind him, his Athena is parked in the shade, silent as always.

• ODY (thought): The island is quiet one day a year. The bikes are quiet every day. Maybe that's why it worked here.

PART 8 · ONE GREY TICK.

PANEL 33 · COMEDY. Singapore, the same morning, 09:00. Pak Chan at his desk. On his phone, a chat with ODY. One grey tick on every message.

• PAK CHAN (message): ODY.
• PAK CHAN (message): ODY?
• PAK CHAN (message): The numbers.
• PAK CHAN (message): ?

PANEL 34 · COMEDY. Pak Remy at the door.

• PAK REMY: Pak, the whole of Bali is offline. Even the internet.
• PAK CHAN: The whole island?
• PAK REMY: The whole island.
• PAK CHAN: ...Then who am I shouting at?

PANEL 35 · COMEDY. Pak Chan tries silence: he puts the phone face down, crosses his arms, closes his eyes. A small timer window counts.

• SYSTEM (grey): [SILENCE ATTEMPT · 00:11] [FAILED]
• (He checks the phone. Still one grey tick.)

PANEL 36. Evening in Singapore. The office is empty. Pak Chan alone at the window, the city lights bright below. He closes his laptop slowly. On the desk, the paper figure from Hong Kong, a slipper print on the word STRESS.

• PAK CHAN (thought): ...Quiet.
• SYSTEM (grey, very faint): [EVEN THE BOARD IS QUIET]

PART 9 · THE STARS.

PANEL 37 · SPLASH, VFX. Night over Bali. No lights anywhere, only the Milky Way, huge and bright, over the rice fields, the temples and the dark sea.

• CAPTION: With every light off, the island can finally see the sky.

PANEL 38 · VFX. Small panels, all looking up: Arya with his mother on the compound step; Komang lying on his roof; Chloe and Jake on a villa lawn; Denisa at her gate; Sekar and Dewa each in their own garden; ODY on his step.

• JAKE: (whispering) ...Oh.
• CHLOE: (whispering) That's what she meant. Look up.

PANEL 39 · VFX, FANTASY. The stars move. Slowly they form constellations of each player's class sign: a delivery box for Arya, a compass for Komang, a wave for Jake, a small house for Denisa, a key for ODY.

• SYSTEM (gold, very faint, written in starlight): [...REBOOTING]

PANEL 40 · VFX. The grandmother at her gate with a tiny oil lamp hidden under her shawl. Behind her, faint glowing lines run under the whole island like roots: niskala, the unseen side.

• GRANDMOTHER: The island rests one day so it can carry all of us for the rest of the year.

PART 10 · NGEMBAK GENI (the morning after).

PANEL 41 · COMEDY. 06:00 the next morning. Phones come back to life all over the island at once. ODY's phone vibrates off the step.

• SFX: BZZT BZZT BZZT BZZT
• SYSTEM: [SIGNAL RESTORED] [UNREAD: 412]

PANEL 42 · COMEDY. ODY reads Pak Chan's chat: a long column of "ODY?" and, at the very bottom, one message sent at midnight.

• PAK CHAN (message): ...Was it quiet?
• ODY (reply): Very.
• PAK CHAN (message): Good. Now sell.

PANEL 43. Ngembak Geni. Families visit each other, shake hands and ask forgiveness. Arya shakes Komang's hand formally.

• ARYA: Forgive me for everything this year.
• KOMANG: Forgive me for the snacks I ate from your bag during Nyepi.
• ARYA: ...What snacks?

PANEL 44 · PRODUCT, SPLASH. Morning. Chloe on the yellow Athena and Jake on the navy EdPower, surfboard on the side rack, ride out onto a fresh empty road with Denisa on her white Victory, open-face helmets on, grinning. Every bike full, silent, no queue.

• CAPTION: The bikes slept too. Every Werigo bike woke up full.
• SYSTEM (blue): [QUEST COMPLETE: OPERATION SILENCE] [RENTERS WHO EXTENDED: 7 · COMPLAINTS: 0]

PANEL 45. Pak Remy's appraisal window on a video call.

• PAK REMY: Revenue on Nyepi: zero. Complaints: zero. Extensions: seven.
• ODY: Quiet sells.
• PAK REMY: ...I'm writing that down.

PANEL 46 · VFX. Arya's System window finally opens again, clean and bright, with a new line.

• SYSTEM (gold): [SYSTEM ONLINE] [NEW PASSIVE SKILL: STILLNESS · RECOVER FULLY AFTER ONE DAY OF SILENCE]
• ARYA: It came back.
• GRANDMOTHER: It never left. You just finally heard it.

PART 11 · THE CITADEL (cliffhanger).

PANEL 47. Video call. Pak Chan, rested, sharper than ever.

• PAK CHAN: Next week I'm in Bali. Jimbaran to Tanjung Benoa. We are finding the building.
• ODY: Which building, Pak?
• PAK CHAN: The Citadel.

PANEL 48 · SPLASH, VFX. Dewa on his grey EdPower at the front of a line of Wedison bikes on the Jimbaran coast road, sunset behind, a huge faint outline of a glass building in the sky.
